Chiropractic for Lower Blood Pressure?
According to a placebo-controlled study, chiropractic adjustment can substantially lower high blood pressure.
25 people diagnosed with early-stage high blood pressure partook in an eight week study where half the group received chiropractic adjustments and the other half received faux adjustments. None of the patients took blood pressure medicine during the study.
Compared to the faux-treated patients, those who got the real chiropractic adjustments saw an average 14 mm Hg greater drop in systolic blood pressure (the top number in a blood pressure count), and an average 8 mm Hg greater drop in diastolic blood pressure (the bottom blood pressure number).
Before and after X-rays showed that chiropractic adjustments were able to realign the Atlas vertebra at the top of the spine, which in turn worked to bring blood pressure down to significantly more acceptable levels. Some scientists suggest that injury to the Atlas vertebra may trigger internal signals that make the arteries contract and increase blood pressure.
In an interview with WebMD, George Bakris, MD, stated "This procedure has the effect of not one, but two blood-pressure medications given in combination, and it seems to be adverse-event free. We saw no side effects and no problems."
Bakris reported that he was stunned by the data. “It was way too good to be true," Bakris says. "The statistician said, 'I don't even believe it.' But we checked for everything, and there it was."
If you or someone you know is treating high blood pressure with costly medication, perhaps it’s time to give chiropractic adjustments a try. With a few simple adjustments, you may be on your way to a healthier, improved quality of life.
